To create a custom state for a roll, navigate to School Management and the 'Manage Rolls' page. Edit a current roll type or add a new one. 

Complete the settings or scroll to the fourth step, 'Actions' and add New State.

Input the state name and choose a type, color, and symbol associated with the state.

See example below of a 'Sick' state added as an explained absence type. Select the three bars to the left of the symbol to re-order the states
